To be honest, I’m also writing this blog, at least in part, for the Thomas I was a few years ago—the one who was at the drugstore (with a baby at home), reading the ingredients on the back of a package, and had no idea what most of those terms even meant. For the person who sensed that something wasn’t right – with what we buy, what we throw away, what we subject our bodies to—but couldn’t find a clear resource that brought it all together.
The gap I sensed back then
There has always been plenty of information on environmental protection and consumer protection – just as there has been plenty of information on toxic substances in products, cosmetics, or food. The problem was never a lack of information. The problem was rather that this information mostly existed in isolation: here, a scientific study on microplastics that hardly anyone outside the scientific community reads; there, an environmental organization focused on oceans and waste; and somewhere in between, parents like us who simply wanted to know: What does this mean for my family, and what concrete steps can I take?
That’s the connection I felt was missing. A place that not only educates but also translates—from the abstract study to the question of what I can actually change the next time I go shopping.
Why I Structured This Blog This Way
That’s why I’m consciously trying to combine several things here that I myself would have wanted in the past:
Clear explanations instead of technical jargon. When I write about “eternal toxins” or microplastics, I try to explain them the way I would have wanted them explained to me – without requiring a degree in chemistry to understand what’s going on.
Honesty instead of alarmism. I never wanted a site that just scares people without offering solutions. Nor did I want a site that downplays problems just because they’re uncomfortable. I used to find both hard to stomach – either scaremongering or whitewashing.
Concrete next steps instead of just theory. Every post should ultimately answer the question: What do I do with this now? For me, that was often the missing final step in much of the environmental information I used to encounter.
A family perspective instead of general advice. Most guides on sustainability or health speak abstractly about “the consumer.” I wanted a place that thinks specifically from the perspective of a family with children – with all the additional questions that entails.
Who I’m Actually Writing This For
Ultimately, I’m writing this blog for people who recognize themselves in what I felt years ago: the sense that environmental protection and health go hand in hand, but no one shows you how to put that into practice in everyday family life without overwhelming yourself.
If you’re at the same point I was back then – overwhelmed by the amount of information, but with a clear sense that you want to make a difference – then you’ve come to the right place. I’ve been wanting a space like this for a long time. Now it exists, and I’m excited to share it with you.
Yours, Thomas
P.S.: And if you have a question about a specific topic, feel free to ask it in the comments.
